14 Free Encrypted & Decentralized Messenger For iOS And Android

Edward Snowden exposed the need for us to have a more secure way of sending messages via smartphone, it is now known that the NSA monitors all messages across the globe. All text messages are logged and crawled by an A.I, these messages are stored permanently in a NSA server for future references, this includes SnapChat.

Remember, everything man made can be unmade. Even with these so-called secured text messengers, these chat messages are still retrievable. The technology driving most of these programs is called “end-to-end encryption,” which means that a message is ciphered before it’s sent and then deciphered after its received, with a powerful computer, these secure encrypted message can be cracked, this is because there is a need to read secret messages between terrorist, loan sharks, murderers, drug lords and more.

Encrypted & Decentralized Messenger

  • Encrypted – Text messages are encrypted with double Ratchet Algorithm, prekeys, Triple Diffie-Hellman (3XDH) handshake, Curve25519, AES-256, HMAC-SHA256 and many more encryption. A strong 128 bit or 256 bit makes the text messages hard to decrypt.
  • Decentralized – Peer to peer communication with no central server that stores their text messages or as a relay between the sender or receiver, thus preventing interception or a record.

1. ChatSecure

Decentralized and Encrypted

ChatSecure

Session is a private messenger offering privacy, anonymity, and security. With end-to-end encryption, no phone numbers for sign-up, and decentralization, Session is a messenger that truly keeps your messages private and secure.

Session uses a powerful decentralized network of servers to route your messages, making it impossible for anyone to leak or sell your data. And with Session’s private routing protocols, your messages are completely anonymous. No one ever knows who you’re talking to, what you’re saying, or even your IP address.

  • No Phone Numbers – Session accounts are completely anonymous. No phone number or email required.
  • No Data Breaches – Session doesn’t collect data, so there’s nothing to leak.
  • No Footprints – Send messages through their onion routing network and leave no trace.
  • Open Source – Session’s code has nothing to hide. Anyone can view, audit, and contribute.
  • Censorship Resistant – With no central point of failure, it’s harder to shut Session down.

2. Threema

Decentralized and Encrypted

Threema

Thanks to consistent end-to-end encryption, no one other than the intended recipient can read transmitted messages, not even Threema as the service operator. It’s not required to provide any personal data whatsoever: If so desired, Threema can be used completely anonymously, i.e., without disclosing one’s phone number or email address.

Threema was built from the ground up with data protection and privacy in mind (Privacy by Design), which is why only as little metadata as possible is generated when using the service. Use Threema to send any type of file. Just like text messages, files are end-to-end encrypted, of course.

  • Consistent End-to-End Encryption – Threema employs the tried and tested open-source cryptography library NaCl. All messages are end-to-end encrypted, and the users are in control of the key exchange. This guarantees that no third party, not even the server operator, can decrypt messages.
  • Metadata Restraint as a Guiding Principle – Threema is designed to generate as little data on servers as technically possible.
  • Anonymous Use, No Account Required – It is not necessary to provide a phone number or email address in order to use Threema.
  • Strong Encryption on Mobile Device – As they are strongly encrypted, the chats and media files stored on the phone are optimally protected against unauthorized access. You can also use a PIN or your fingerprint to lock the app.
  • Decentralized Architecture – Chats, contact lists, and groups* are managed in a decentralized manner directly on the involved devices; no data is stored on a server. Threema differs significantly from conventional messengers in this respect.

3. ChatSecure

Decentralized and Encrypted

chat secure

ChatSecure is a free and open source messaging app that features OTR encryption over XMPP. You can connect to an existing Google account, create new accounts on public XMPP servers (including via Tor), or even connect to your own server for extra security. Unlike other apps that keep you stuck in their walled garden, ChatSecure is fully interoperable with other clients that support OTR and XMPP, such as Adium, Jitsi, and more.

ChatSecure only uses well-known open source cryptographic libraries to keep your conversations private. Other apps may make claims about ‘military grade’ security but, without publicly auditable source code and verifiable end-to-end encryption, you cannot be truly safe.

  • XMPP with TLS certificate pinning.
  • OTR for verifiable end-to-end encryption and forward secrecy.
  • Tor to help bypass restrictive firewalls.
  • SQLCipher to locally encrypt conversation logs.

Can you tell me only text part is encryption secure or video chat is also encryption secure?
As I found many leaked videos are stolen from some of online chat/video applications.

I’ve tried several app on the list above but none of them give the same experience like the encrypted messaging i use right now, its called StealthChat. Beside provide a high level security they added some unique concept such as lock your app screen with scramble words in certain time so nobody can’t snooping on your conversation.

The least aggressive attempts to undermine encrypted communications platforms are made by the CIA and NSA at Signal. At first glance this sounds like a good thing, but it’s not. Think about the implications of it. Why don’t the CIA/NSA need to work as hard to undermine Signal as they do other platforms?

Although signal is very secure last I researched, I’ve been using it for years, even before snowden, when it was text secure. However, it is completely dependant on google cloud for connection. It didn’t used to be, as it was correctly using sms protocol when it was text secure. What this means is that the app will not function without the google/nazi/nsa/free mason update. This is not foss, or anything to do with freedom from tyranny, which is the whole point of privacy. A check, and a balance as was primarily fought for in the revolution. So blah blah on signal. That’s so yesterday’s trap. The decentralized, foss/linux direction is the only salvation for secure, private communication. Everything else is server junk with back doors, by any number of countless, highly interested parties. All dedicated to tyranny. No america in these wet dreams. Only self serving infiltrators. Antichrist/ antiprotestant=death.

One doesn’t have to be too smart to understand that Signal, although very secure, is repleat with connection slavery troubles due to being dependant on GCM, which only gives Google sole power over your communication. Also, Silence Encrypted Messenger on Fdroid is the same encryption, yet with much faster SMS protocol, & doesn’t need internet to function in a crisis, nor updates. Fdroid apps are downgradable as well in case of preference. However the same UI as Signal, it does lack calling etc, and is only texting at this point, but still better for privacy/freedom. Digital Safe Guard/Securyism (DSG) is imo the best for use with Threema, & the like for highly encrypted QR text files, & octet streams of pics, and audio. I REALLY LIKE DSG FOR IN “YOUR FACE NSA” PROTECTION AS IT CAN BE USED ON ANY INSECURE MESSAGING PLATFORM, & DOESN’T PUT OUT ANY INTERNET TO ACHIEVE IT, HAS VAULT, CRYPTO WALLET, & BLOCKCHAIN ADVANCEMENT. FOR THE PEOPLE, IS WHERE I STAND, NOT PETTY ATTACKS. FACT IS LATE COMERS TO SIGNAL ARE FINE, BUT THEY’RE STILL WAY BEHIND IN CRITICAL DEFENSE OF FREEDOM. THE ENEMY IS LAUGHING AT YOU FOR USING SIGNAL RIGHT NOW, AS THE HERD MUST GET ON THEIR KNEES FOR UPDATES.

I believe that most secured and encrypted messenger is that one which uses p2p. So it would be reasonable to choose something like Utopia p2p. Anyway, even WhatsApp and Telegram face data breaks from time to time. So we have to be careful anyway and follow some security rules provided by the developers.

From reading the comments there seems to be a lot of people using Signal and a lot of people kidding themselves about privacy. When choosing an IM you need to make sure every part of it is open source not just the encryption and it is Decentralized also check who controls the connection, otherwise it is a waste of time. Signal is controlled by Google who’s business is controlling your information.
