Nice article, thank you very much. The only correction is the screenshot for TightVNC is actually RealVNC, which is a paid product. I’ve used it in certain environments and it works great. They do have a fee product but i t may be discontinued, im not sure.

Wouldn’t touch TeamViewer. They decided my use was commercial and cut off access with little warning or explanation. Actually, I was using it at home to connect a second computer to my TV. I had to rip and replace. Annoying. There are better products.

Ditto. I had used it for a few of years to connect to my home computers: a desktop and 3 laptops. A couple of weeks ago, they just decided I was using it commercially and cut me off, with no warning, which is why I’m looking for open source alternatives now. I submitted a request for them to “reconsider” my account status and never heard back from them. Since there was nothing about my very light and occasional usage that should have triggered even the most sensitive “commercial use” red flag, the cynic in me wonders if they just boot free users after a while if they don’t upgrade to the ridiculously expensive commercial licenses.

There is a setting in Teamviewer to accept Lan connections exclusively which then doesn’t use their servers to jump over firewalls. Maybe if you just use this on your local network with 192.168.x.x IP’s you won’t be sending a “beacon” to Teamviewer and getting cut off. Haven’t tried it but might be worth a shot.

        • Gravatar

Thanks for the suggestion @Mike, using this setting seems to work well (so far) with TeamViewer.

TeamViewer is not VNC. It’s a completely different protocol and it will not connect to a VNC server.

In contrast to traditional VNC connections, TeamViewer substantially enhances your capabilities with remote support, remote access and your home office.

A very good VNC client and remote support tool which can be added in the above list is: R-HUB remote support servers. It is at par with above remote support tools.

TeamViewer (and a couple other ofthe listed tools) is not compatible with the VNC protocol.
Your failure to distinguish between the concept and the protocol destroys your credibility.

Thank you for featuring Remmina. :)

The use of “free” equates products that in terms of freedom have nothing in common for an arbitrary focus on charging money.

Yes, Remmina is also gratis, but that isn’t its most important distinction in being free.
A lot of these are more poignantly non-free, meaning you can’t use them how you want, see the source code, change the source code, and share it.

Any product that doesn’t want you to do that has something to hide and/or want to hold power over you.

As an additional point, copyleft software (like Remmina) require you to share on equal terms, so that it never ends up as non-free software.

TightVNC, TigerVNC, X2Go and mRemoteNG are also libre software solutions. :)

UltraVNC won’t let you open their page with an ad-blocker.

Just, no. Anything that is “as-a-service” is actually a disservice.

Also, you did not mention Remote Ripple which is a next generation TightVNC viewer, available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, and is free even for commercial use.
